The Mod Is a Scorecard, Not a Strategy

For many employers, workers compensation performance eventually comes back to one number: the Experience Modification Factor, or Mod. It appears on renewal documents, influences premiums and often becomes the focus of client concern. However, the Mod is not where strategy begins. It is where past performance shows up.

The Mod is not a lever to pull. It is not a process to manage. It is a result. By the time an organization is reacting to its Mod, many of the behaviors and decisions that created it are already in the past.

For agents, carriers and employers who want to truly influence workers compensation outcomes, the focus has to shift away from the Mod itself and toward the operational metrics that drive it.

Employers today are not lacking data. In fact, the opposite is true. They receive loss runs listing claims and reserves. They review Mod worksheets showing a final score. They may also receive safety reports tracking incidents and trends.
