Controlling Workers’ Compensation Cost and Absenteeism Step 1

January 19, 2009 By //  by Robert Elliott, J.D. Leave a Comment

This is a four-part mini-series about controlling absence through team-building. As the economy continues to falter, employers need every edge they can find and implement to contain the staggering costs experienced by the phenomenon of absenteeism becoming socially acceptable in some U. S. corporations.

Try the WC Cost Calculator to show the REAL COST of work comp.

Costs Related to Absenteeism:

  • employee replacement
  • overtime
  • reduced productivity
  • poor morale
  • straight dollars & cents paid in sick time to the absent employee
  • negative impact of absenteeism experienced during downsizing

When developing an absence management program, an essential part of workers’ compensation cost control, the design, communication, administration and funding are as important as they are in any other group benefits health plan or program. This is especially true for employers who provide liberal sick time and generous workers’ compensation benefits. The limitations and confines, as well as the benefits, must be explained in detail.

Employers must dramatically revise strategies of communicating corporate standards for absenteeism and find ways communicate these corporate standards to employees. In turn, employees must internalize the value standards set for acceptable absenteeism limits. The “sell” must be made to the company, then to each employee. It’s a two-part sales process, but employers generally think they only sell the system to management and employees once. The programs must be “sold” to both employees and management repeatedly. Just like you yourself receive reinforcing literature from your health care prescription provider on the average of once every two months, you need to stay in contact with employees regarding workers’ compensation issues just as often.

Next: Coping Strategies & Step 1 of 4.

Workers’ Comp Kit® is a web-based online Assessment, Benchmarking and Cost Containment system for employers. It provides all the materials needed to reduce your costs significantly in 85% less time than if you designed a program from scratch.
