Eyes Focused on New York Man for Alleged Work Comp Scam

A man is facing several felonies after allegedly attempting to defraud the state in regard to an eye injury suffered in a factory accident. According to The Daily Mail, the man was arrested by state police at Livingston after a year-long investigation jointly conducted with the New York State Insurance Frauds Bureau and the Office of the Fraud Inspector General.

The suspect sustained an eye injury on January 4, 2006 but, authorities said, he lied about the extent of his injuries, claiming to be “permanently, totally disabled in both eyes.” He later filed for workers’ compensation benefits for his injury.

A subsequent investigation revealed the man’s injuries were not as extensive as he claimed and he falsified numerous claims to the State of New Workers’ Compensation Board. Authorities believe, if successful, the man might have received around $700,000 in fraudulent benefits. (workersxzcompxzkit)

The man is charged with first-degree perjury, third-degree insurance fraud, both class D felonies; first-degree falsifying business records and violating the Workers’ Compensation Law, class E felonies. He was arraigned in Hudson City Court by Judge William Cranna and remanded to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash or $40,000 bail bond.
