Covid-19 Workers’ Comp Claims – Focus on the Fundamentals

April 20, 2020 By //  by Michael B. Stack

There have been some recent changes in the state legislature of how to handle coven 19 workers’ comp claims. The state of Illinois recently made a statement that for all frontline workers, they’re compensable claims. Hello, my name is Michael stack. I’m the CEO of Amaxx, and I’ve been getting some questions recently because of some of those changes.

How do we handle these Covid-19 claims? Oh my gosh, I don’t know what to do, and I’ll tell you exactly what I’ve told those couple individuals that I’ve spoken with is to focus on the fundamentals, focus on the fundamentals.

Covid-19 Workers’ Comp Claims Are Managed The Same

Covid-19 injury work comp claims are no different than every other claim that we manage in workers’ compensation and the fundamentals that we use to successfully manage most claims are the same exact system that we’re going to follow to manage Covid-19 claims as well. We respond to those injuries properly, set expectations, communicate with those individuals, investigate those claims that they’re actually legitimate claims that you’ve got a better understanding of what’s happening, get them the medical treatment that they need. Tap into this expertise of your carriers as your TPA is their medical man’s departments. Those medical experts that have that knowledge of how to handle these individual claims and then get those people back to work. If that is telecommuting, if that’s some other function of return to work, tap into that.

Implementation May Be Different

The same exact fundamentals that we use to manage injuries are the same fundamentals we’re going to use to manage successively these Covid-19 claims as well, so don’t get sidetracked that you don’t know how to do this because you know exactly how to do this or you should know exactly how to do this if you know what those fundamentals are, and we’ve got a lot of other videos and information as far as telling you how to go into these fundamentals more specifically, but dial that in, dial in those fundamentals and do them maybe in a slightly different way. Maybe you’re doing more zoom calls to check in with individuals on a weekly basis, but you’re seeing that communication, the management of that process, that injury management process is exactly the same of how we handle every other injury in worker’s compensation.
