The Ohio Bureau of Workers, Compensation (BWC) recently just issued its 100th policy under the Other States Coverage program, a new option that protects Ohio businesses with employees who work in other states.
The coverage ensures these employees are protected regardless of where they are injured without the need to manage policies in multiple states with varying laws.
“We’re hearing from employers that are now comfortable pursuing business opportunities across the border because they’re assured of the proper coverage wherever they operate,” said BWC Administrator/CEO Sarah Morrison. “This program also supports business growth in our state by allowing employers to focus on their operations instead of managing multiple workers’ comp polices.”
Bil-Jax, Inc., a member of Haulotte Group, is located in Archbold (Fulton County) and has been in business since 1947.
With approximately 200 employees, the company manufactures aerial work platforms and scaffold products. More than 25 full-time employees work in Virginia and additional sales and service employees are scattered throughout at least nine other states. All of these employees are now insured through the Other States Coverage program.
“Running a business with employees located in a number of different states, each having its own rules and regulations, can be a challenge,” said Guy Burkholder, Head of Administration and Human Resources for Haulotte North America. “BWC’s Other States Coverage allowed us to streamline our workers compensation coverage, allowing us to focus our time on the real work to be done, serving our loyal customers and employees.”
BWC generally provides coverage for employees working temporarily outside of Ohio. However, complications could arise when the injured worker files a claim in another state. Treatment can be delayed and businesses can be subject to penalties by the other state.
A law enacted last year granted BWC the authority to contract with an insurer to provide this coverage.
BWC is working with United States Insurance Services (USIS) and Zurich Insurance to provide that coverage.
