As part of its ongoing outreach efforts, The Industrial Commission of Arizona (ICA) recently hosted a free seminar to educate employers on their rights before and after an Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health (ADOSH) inspection.
This is just part of the outreach the ICA does to proactively work alongside employers in a collaborative way. Presenters were ADOSH Assistant Director, Jessie Atencio, and attorney Chuck Keller of Snell & Wilmer.
Atencio stated, “Seminars like this are designed to shed light on safety and compliance issues so that employers are educated prior to us arriving and then aware of their rights when we are on site.”
Atencio and Keller engaged the group of employers and employees in an interactive session of rights and obligations during an ADOSH inspection.
Keller underlined the importance of collaboration between employers and compliance officers, as well as the need for adequate training and drug testing programs to avoid unfavorable inspections which may result in citations. The crowd was given the opportunity to ask questions, share concerns, and discuss personal experiences they have had during inspections.
The seminar covered everything from constitutional rights to rules and regulations during the employee interview section of an inspection.
Atencio shared real-life scenarios he has experienced while working with ADOSH to illustrate how crucial it is for employees to be knowledgeable of their rights and duties, which contributes to a safe workplace and lower likelihood of citations.
Goal to Facilitate Interactions
The purpose of this free seminar was to facilitate interactions between employers and compliance officers during inspections.
In addition, employers were instructed on how to handle the inspection process successfully.
