If you’re an Ohio employer, how good is your workplace safety record?
Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation (BWC) Administrator and CEO Steve Buehrer recently visited Upper Sandusky to recognize Ohio’s newest safety council and deliver keynote remarks at the annual meeting of the Upper Sandusky Chamber of Commerce. The Wyandot County Safety Council began its official partnership with BWC Jan. 1 to educate area employers and workers about the importance of workplace safety.
“Employers in Wyandot County understand they have a very important role to play in ensuring their workers return home safely to their families each evening,” Buehrer said. “Safety Councils offer a great opportunity for employers to learn and share best practices, and I’m pleased the Upper Sandusky Chamber of Commerce is bringing area employers together in the name of workplace safety.”
Statewide Effort to Improve Workplaces
BWC’s Division of Safety & Hygiene sponsors 82 safety councils that are organized across the state by local safety-minded groups to inform participants of new safety techniques, products and services, and provide a thorough knowledge of topics, including occupational safety and health, workers’ comp and risk management education.
BWC provides the annual funding to sponsoring organizations to underwrite a portion of administrative costs. The Wyandot County Safety Council was formed and will be managed by the Upper Sandusky Chamber of Commerce.
Employers can earn a two-percent premium rebate for participating in a safety council, and an additional two-percent performance bonus for reducing either frequency or severity of workplace accidents by 10-percent, or with maintenance at zero.
More than $5.8 million was awarded to more than 2,000 employers for their participation in a safety council in Fiscal Year 2014, and 2,600 employers received more than $3.2 million in performance bonuses.
