A Schenectady man was sentenced in federal court to pay over $20,000 in restitution and five years probation for lying in order to obtain workers compensation, federal prosecutors announced.
The individual admitted in April to receiving federal workers comp benefits he was not entitled to.
The man filed for benefits following an injury while he was a safety technician for the Transportation Security Administration at Albany International Airport in July 2004, and he collected benefits from September 2004 through August 2009. He was required to file certifications indicating he was not employed and that he had no stake in any business.
But evidence obtained by the government confirmed he was working at an auto repair business he purchased in May 2009 from Spring 2008 through August 2009 prosecutors said.
The benefits amounted to over $1,000 a month. He will be required to pay back $21,897.98 for the period from April 2008 through August 1, 2009.
