In a bid to prevent serious workplace incidents, Workplace Safety officials implemented a new approach of releasing preliminary investigation reports to the public. Last month, the Yukon Workers' Compensation Health and Safety Board released two preliminary reports examining the mining-sector deaths of two mine workers. One man, killed in October, was struck by his own pickup truck while descending an underground mine slope. The other workers died in September crushed by his front-end loader when it rolled onto its cab. Publicly issuing the reports, indicating direct causes and possible prevention measures, is a new procedure for the board, says its director of occupational health and safety, Kurt Dieckmann. "We did a lot of soul searching after the last couple of [fatal] incidents that we had and we determined that we have got to get information out quicker to people so that they can look at their own workplaces," Dieckmann notes, adding that both deaths were "very preventable." He says the board's aim is to release preliminary investigation reports in the event of fatalities, critical injuries and serious incidents that don't necessarily lead to injury.
