Woman Arrested for Allegedly Cashing Dead Mother’s WC Checks

A woman who allegedly cashed several workers’ compensation checks addressed to her deceased mother was arrested by New York police aiding state fraud investigators.

The woman is charged with forgery and grand larceny forging for cashing four checks totaling $1,600 over a four month period.

Authorities said the woman’s mother died in February. Investigators said the checks were still being sent because the insurer was not aware the elderly woman had passed away.

A man given one year to live due to an aggressive brain tumor, says he’s worried his previous employment may be the cause of his illness.

According to a report from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the man and his wife were employed at an Alberta hospital as psychiatric nurses for 17 years before relocating to Manitoba recently.

In 2008, the family said it had received a letter from a nursing union, claiming a CT scanner at the hospital was not properly leaded. The letter stated they had been exposed to low levels of radiation.

According to doctors at the hospital, they can’t prove what caused the man’s cancer, therefore he’s not entitled to workers’ compensation. However, other people who spent time in the facility were also diagnosed with brain tumors.

Alberta Health Services reports it assembled a team of experts who determined the “situation did not pose a health risk to patients or staff at the hospital.”

The family, however, is seeking a cancer cluster study of prior and current employees and patients to determine if their cancer rates are greater than the rest of society. The Alberta nurses’ union indicated a study is not likely, but Alberta Health Services has agreed to a third party review for the radiation exposure. (workersxzcompxzkit)

According to the union’s president, if the study indicates a distinct connection between the absence of lead, the exposure of staff and the resulting cancers, the (Workers’ Compensation Board) may have to deal with a major claims.
