OTTAWA CANADA Couple Win Double Parental Leaves for Twins

October 5, 2009 By //  by Robert Elliott, J.D. Leave a Comment

An Ottawa (Canada)  couple has won a battle with its employer, the federal government, successfully arguing that parents of twins should both be able to receive full parental leaves. According to  the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the father of twin girls convinced the Employment Insurance Board of Referees that each parent is qualified to claim benefits for one of the twins. When the couple  discovered they were having two babies, they both applied for parental employment insurance (EI) benefits, but the father was denied. The present Canadian policy stipulates that multiple children are looked upon as one. Following arguments  in front of the federal board, the father was awarded the same benefits as his wife. Multiple people can't be equivalent to one. It's just a blatant case of discrimination the case was made, the father said. (workersxzcompxzkit) Noting this is  the first ruling of its kind in Canada, the couples attorney said,  "This now means in any situation where you have two qualified parents,  two people who are qualified to make an employment insurance claim. and they have two or more children, they will now be able to make two 35-week parental benefit claims, as opposed to one 35-week claim.
