Just as discriminatory hiring practices are against employment laws, so is sexual harassment which translates into fostering a hostile work environment.
Oregon Company Settles Employee Lawsuit for $260K
A Oregon employer, while “adamantly” denying any wrongdoing, agrees to settle a sexual harassment suit filed by a female employee for $260,000.
According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), a female employee was “repeatedly grabbed, (was) sought to forcibly undress and (was) propositioned” by a male supervisor “over many months, despite her complaints to management.” The EEOC noted that the woman “ultimately was forced to quit out of fear for her safety.”
As part of the settlement will pay the individual $260,000. The company will also adopt and distribute a sexual harassment policy written in both English and Spanish.
The company’s CEO said these suits cost money to defend regardless of the merits and divert management resources needed to run the business, noting settling the suit was cheaper than fighting it. (workersxzcompxzkit)
Note: Having a sexual harrassment policy in place and training all personnel, would prevent this type of law suit and be even cheaper. Just a guess, but I BET this company also has high workers’ comp costs.
