E-Learning Used To Help Young Workers Stay Safe

June 24, 2010 By //  by Rebecca Shafer, J.D. Leave a Comment

If your workers’ compensation policy were a high-rise structure, we could say a well thought out and consistently implemented safety program was the footers in the foundation. Without a strong foundation, the building collapses.

The safety program supports the workers’ comp policy by preventing workplace injuries. Here’s how New South Wales uses e-learning to help its young workers.

Minister for Finance Michael Daley and Member for Parramatta Tanya Gadiel recently launched an interactive online tool designed to take the guesswork out of workplace safety for young workers.

Daley said the new e-learning tool, Hazard-a-Guess, was a free learning resource that would help workers under 25 and students from 15 to 18 years old identify and address workplace safety risks.
“Young workers can be more vulnerable to workplace safety risks because of their youth and inexperience, as well as their reluctance to speak up about safety concerns,” he said.
“In New South Wales, 15 young people are injured on the job every day, and young people account for around 13% of all employment injuries and occupational diseases. The impact of a workplace injury can be devastating and carry life-long consequences, so health and safety education among young people is essential.
According to officials, this tool creates an opportunity to educate school students before they enter the workforce and encourages workers to embrace a risk prevention culture across the state’s workplaces.
The program also assists employers, educators and trainers with their OHS induction responsibilities, by allowing them to track their worker or student’s progress and highlight key areas where further training is required.
A stand-out feature of the tool is it allows employers and educators to tailor its contents by uploading photos or adding questions and tasks to suit the unique needs of their workplace.
Gadiel said Hazard-a-Guess is presented in an engaging game-show style format and presents a series of real workplace scenarios including slips, trips and falls, manual handling, personal protective equipment and the workplace environment.
“The user must make the correct decision to prevent the character being fined, injured or killed, while decisions that improve safety are rewarded with virtual dollars,” she said.

A series of information kits have also been developed that include a CD of Hazard-a-Guess as well as work health and safety guidance material relevant to specific industries including construction, manufacturing, transport, hospitality, rural and transport.

“All workers have a fundamental right to work in an environment where workplace safety risks are properly managed and controlled. This is another example of the NSW Government’s commitment to raising awareness of work health and safety issues among young people and this tool will help give them a safe start to their working lives,” Gadiel added.
McDonalds Australia Managing Director Catriona Noble said the organization was pleased to be working with WorkCover to promote the safety initiative. (workersxzcompxzkit)

“Young people make up a large proportion of our employees and this tool is an innovative way of encouraging them to think about hazards and the importance of identifying and addressing injury risks,” she said.
