Companies looking to improve workplace safety may apply for grand money from the Utah Labor Commission. The commission has $300,000 in grant money to distribute. Money for the project comes from a 0.25% assessment on workers compensation premiums paid annually in Utah.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, businesses, community-based organizations, nonprofits, and educational institutions are eligible. Applications must be submitted to the commission prior to 6 p.m. on April 25. (www.utahlaborcommission.utah.gov)
Statistics from the Utah Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s website, report workplace-related injuries and illnesses dropped in the year 2008 to 2009, the last year data was available. (WCxKit)
Approximately 35,300 reportable injuries took place among a work force of 1.16 million individuals in 2009, an incidence rate of 3.9%. Of those, 14,500 were labeled serious enough that employees remained home from work, were restricted in what they could do, or had to be transferred to other positions.
In 2008 there were 46,500 reported injuries and illnesses among 1.2 million workers, an incident rate of 4.9%. That led to 18,900 lost-time accidents, the website reports. (WCxKit)
