Contractors are often called to domestic premises to clean/paint a roof, undertake renovations or install plumbing or wiring. It's important that trades people know what to do when they suspect the material being worked on contains asbestos.
Private contractors have had to pay clean-up bills in excess of $100 000 because preventative actions were not taken before commencing a job. (WCxKit)
Ignoring your legal obligations won't just cost you the decontamination and clean up bill. You could also face up to a $75 000 fine or one years' jail as an individual, or $375 000 for a corporation.
Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (Australia) is offering free information sessions throughout Queensland for obligation holders including builders, contractors and other trade services.
The sessions will focus on safe work procedures and legal requirements to keep you, and those around you, safe when working with materials expected to contain asbestos.
What will the information sessions cover?
1. How to work safely around asbestos.
2. What to do if you suspect asbestos is present.
3. What to do if you come into contact with asbestos.
4. How to correctly transport and dispose of asbestos.
5. How to comply with legal requirements when working with asbestos.
To register your attendance at an information session, see the link below to find out which dates work best for you. (WCxKit)
In the event your preferred session is fully booked, you will be able to select an expression of interest button to be contracted if a place becomes available or a further session is planned.
