New South Wales (Australia) Minister for Finance Michael Daley recently announced the start of a state-wide compliance program targeting mobile crane safety for the month of November.
Daley said that there had been 19 workplace incidents involving mobile cranes in NSW over the past two years. (WCxKit)
“Given the potential for loss of life or injury, it is important WorkCover conduct inspections to make sure businesses are complying with regulations and assist them to help prevent injuries,” he said.
WorkCover inspectors are in the process of visiting some 90 construction sites where mobiles cranes are operating.
“The inspectors will examine mobile cranes in the greater Sydney metropolitan area and country regions to ensure they comply with the relevant Australian Standards and NSW OHS regulations,” Daley remarked.
Inspectors are to examine the competency of crane crews, traffic management, and communication systems, and check that doggers and riggers are correctly licensed.
The compliance program follows several incidents where mobile cranes overturned, which resulted in WorkCover issuing a specific Safety Alert on this type of incident. (WCxKit)
The WorkCover inspectors have been instructed to take appropriate action where breaches of the safety regulations are identified.
