Member for the Entrance Grant McBride in New South Wales (Australia) recently launched a practical resource to assist trainers and employers better engage with young workers and develop work health and safety programs that more closely meet their needs.
McBride said the new resource, yPack, was developed by Youthsafe and the Group Training Association of NSW and was funded through a $158,000 grant under the WorkCover NSW Assist Program. (WCxKit)
“It is a sad reality that workers aged between 15 and 25 are one of the high risk groups more likely to be injured at work and each day in New South Wales 14 young workers are injured on the job,” McBride said “Around 12 percent of all major employment injuries and occupational diseases occur among the State’s 558,000 young workers, resulting in more than 5,200 workers compensation claims during 2008/09,” he said.
“yPack includes a series of fact sheets that highlight characteristics specific to understanding young people, and their perception of health and safety, and provides clear strategies to assist employers and young people meet their workplace safety obligations,” Mr. McBride added.
Youthsafe CEO Anne Deans noted their research indicated that young people’s brains are still developing well into their 20s and that the part of the brain responsible for identifying and managing risk is among the last areas to fully develop.
McBride said the NSW Government has an ongoing commitment to protect the safety of workers and in particular our young workers. (WCxKit)
“Safety should be a number one priority in all workplaces and this resource will directly impact more than 10,000 apprentices and trainees across 6000 industries,” McBride said. “I commend Youthsafe, WorkCover NSW and the Group Training Association for developing yPack to help employers and young workers lower workplace injuries among our young workers.”
