Following recent accidents occurring when operating quad bikes, a draft Code of Practice is being developed by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and distributors relating to the “Use of All Terrain Vehicles in the Workplace.” These are referred to as Quad Bikes in some countries, including Australia.
Heads of Workplace Safety Authorities (HWSA) formed a working party comprising of OHS Regulators and industry representatives to look at strategies to improve quad bike safety within the workplace.

Safety Points to Consider

1. Certified rider training, provided and/or arranged at point of sale, be given to anyone riding a quad bike on proper use and potential risks. Reading a manual and/or viewing an instructional video in conjunction with certified required to reinforce the training. (WCxKit)
2. Quad bikes can roll easily, especially on loose terrain or any area where hazards may be present.
3. Ensure the quad bike is used within the manufacturer’s guidelines.
4. Inexperienced riders are at particular risk. Ensure inexperienced riders have received the proper certified training before riding a quad bike.
5. The capacity to carry or tow a load is limited. Refer to the Owners Operations Manual to determine whether towing or carrying a load is permitted If so, ensure it is done within the limits and capabilities of both the machine and the operator and that particular care is taken over uneven or sloping land.
6. Helmets are compulsory quad bike apparel.
7. Ensure quad bikes are properly serviced.
8. Never carry passengers on a standard (single seat) quad bike.
9. Never allow a person under 16 years of age to operate a full size quad bike.
10. Ensure that quad bikes are not ridden whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
11. Risk assessments, where applicable, should be undertaken prior to operation.
