A new report highlights the restrictions some workers face when it comes to toilet break rules. Research published by the London-based Labour Research Department (LRD) found many employees, particularly laborers in the mining and construction industries as well as drivers, are impacted due to a lack of toilet facilities.
The report claims bus drivers, for example, could not always find time between routes to use the toilet and many cities do not offer adequate facilities. (WCxKitz) Those with health problems such as irritable bowel syndrome found particular difficulties.
Although office staff rarely complained about limited availability of toilets, some were found to be governed by strict toilet break rules – for example in call centers. At one call center workers were given a wooden spoon in teams. When using the facilities, the worker had to take the spoon, thus allowing only one person to go at any one time.
In other places, employers attempt to dock wages for time not on the production line or – as in some meat industry plants – refuse to let workers off the production line to use the toilet during shifts lasting up to four hours, the report discovered.
