New Resources Help Alberta Workers Stay Safe on Ice
It all started when a snowcat driver and his vehicle went through the ice while constructing an ice bridge on the Peace River. The prime contractor at the site pleaded guilty to violating the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and was fined a total of $300,375 by the court.
The fine included a creative sentencing penalty of $297,500 to produce a best practice guideline for working on ice in Alberta.
Hector Goudreau, minister of Alberta Employment and Immigration said the best practice manual provides comprehensive knowledge for employers and workers to work safely. It is the first time that all the information needed to plan work on ice has been available in one package, he added. (workersxzcompxzkit)
The manual is available is a pocket-size version, made of tear-proof and water-proof paper. In addition, the best practices manual and electronic course can be accessed online at: www.employment.alberta.ca/icesafety.
