Wyoming reports occupational fatalities in the state declined by 15, from 48 in 2007 to 33 in 2008, a 31.3% decrease.
The numbers show it was the largest one-year decline in workplace deaths in the state since the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries program began in 1993. The reduction was associated with a 50.0% drop in transportation accidents (17 in 2008 compared to 34 in 2007).
Mining and Transportation & Warehousing led Wyoming industries in occupational fatalities with eight deaths each. Just over half (51.5%) of total fatalities were due to transportation accidents, a result consistent with other years. Transportation accidents are the most common cause of death.
A total of 352 people died on the job in the state from 2000 to 2008. Of the total, 59.7% (210) resulted from transportation accidents, 156 of which occurred on Wyoming’s roads and highways. The Transportation & Warehousing industry experienced the largest number of deaths for the nine years with 78 or 22.2%. Fifty-six (15.9%) of 352 job-related deaths took place in a variety of trucking industries, with very few deaths occurring in other forms of transportation (e.g., rail).
Variations in fatalities from year to year are, to some extent, the result of the random nature of work-related accidents. The only events showing a consistent pattern in Wyoming are transportation events, highway accidents in particular. (workersxzcompxzkit)
